Opening Day at Hall 9, Stand K9-41

Hall 9, where stand K9-41 sat.

The first morning of a trade show is decided before the doors open. On 7 November 2023, at the Dubai World Trade Centre, that meant a stand in Hall 9 with a slicer on it, a fascia with the stand number, and about forty minutes to check that everything a visitor would touch actually worked.

This page is about the stand itself — where it sat, what was on it, and what the first day of an edition looks like from behind the counter.

Where Hall 9 Sits in the Show

Gulfood Manufacturing splits across several halls, and the split is not arbitrary: the ingredients side and the equipment side draw different visitors. Hall 9 sits on the equipment side, which means the people walking past have already decided they are looking at machines.

That matters more than stand size. A stand in the right hall with a modest footprint will have better conversations than a large stand in a hall where visitors are shopping for flavourings.

What Was on the Stand

One machine: a fresh meat slicer, on the floor rather than on a plinth, so that a visitor could stand at the feed end and see the blade carrier rather than a photograph of it.

The stand number, K9-41, was on the fascia. For a first edition that is the single most useful piece of signage, because a visitor who has written down a stand number and cannot see it will walk past.

What a First Morning Actually Consists Of

Three things happen in the first hour, in this order.

The walk-past. Most of the traffic in the first hour is orientation, not interest: visitors are finding the halls and the stands they came for. Counting walk-pasts at this point tells you nothing.

The first real stop. Someone stops because the machine is on the floor and running, or because the stand number matched their list. That conversation sets the tone for the day, because the questions it produces are the ones you will hear for three days.

The repeat. A visitor who stopped on the way in often comes back with a colleague in the afternoon. The return visit is the one worth preparing for, which is why the numbers given in the first conversation should be written down.

What Visitors Did at the Stand

The slicer invited one specific behaviour: people wanted to see the blade carrier come out. A detachable carrier is a maintenance claim, and a maintenance claim is only credible if the part can be lifted in front of the buyer.

The second thing they asked for was a change of thickness — not a demonstration of the range, but a change to their own thickness, so they could judge the slice rather than the specification.

What We Would Do Differently

Two things.

The first is signage: a stand number on a fascia is legible from the aisle, but a small card at eye level on the counter is legible from three metres away, and most visitors decide whether to stop at about that distance.

The second is material handling. A slicer that can be fed by a visitor needs product on the stand that the visitor recognises, not a demonstration block. Buyers judge a cut against the product they actually sell.

The technical questions from that edition are collected on the slicing page, the full record of the 2023 stand is on the 2023 edition page, and every stand we have held since is listed on the Dubai exhibitions page.
